Introduction

Christine Lee and other students involved in EWB established BOOTUP in 2005. The project involved computer-building workshops using donated computers and equipment. Once the students completed the workshops, they were able to keep the computers they worked on. This idea has since evolved, undergoing three distinct phases however the purpose remains the same: to provide underprivileged students with exposure to science and the environment as well as access to technology.

Through a partnership with EWB, AIChE hopes to take BOOTUP into phase IV by providing material support and volunteers. One of our current projects and possible ongoing one is the AIChE Energy Initiatives Student Chapter Competition where we are asked to develop "a hands-on demonstration or experiment that illustrates an important concept in alternative energy, while also contributing to the K-12 curriculum learning activities." We are also interested in including a chemistry project for the students to work on but we have not created one yet.

Past Projects

AIChE Energy Initiatives Student Chapter Competition: We have submitted our proposal and have been selected as one of the chapters to receive the grant of $2500. We plan to have three workshops where we teach the students about different alternative energies with an emphasis in solar energy. We plan to start our visits at the participating schools, Mar Vista Central High School in Culver City and John Burroughs Middles School in Los Angeles, mid-February. For more detail, please view the actual competition proposal below:

Student Waterkeepers in Action:
In this project, students from Mar Vista Central High School were trained to be caretakers of their local waterway and watershed.  Victor Vasquez, the coordinator of the UCLA Environmental Science and Engineering (ESE) environmental community project for ESE graduate students, and Christine Lee, a ESE graduate student and Engineers Without Borders (EWB) officer, were the leaders of this project.
